Katarina Witt started skating when she was five. As her natural talent began to show, she received an entry to the Karl-Marx-Stadt school that is geared towards youngsters with sporty aptitude. Her coach Jutta was also in attendance. The year that Witt made her breakthrough was in 1982 when she came second in the World Championships in Copenhagen.
